Peniche is pretty well known in Portugal for its watersports such as surfing and sailing. With its windy weather and cool water scuba diving is a very sought after activity by many tourists. You want however to head over to the Berlengas archipelago for the best diving experience since it is one of the most beautiful places in Portugal for diving.
The Berlengas have no permanent population nowadays and is a protected area where you can find a big number of caves, wrecks and barrier reefs teeming with marine life. The waters are very clean and the islands history is incredible.
This place is a heaven for tech divers and experienced divers. You can stay at hostels or try camping facilities. Either ways you will fall in love with the blue waters, beautiful caves and exiting fauna.
Diving can be divided to 3 parts: Berlenga, Stelae and Farilhoes. You will need a few weeks’ time to experience all the dives here.
Cova do Sono or Hollow of sleep is a sheltered bay with many caves where you can find lobsters, an ideal second dive for many divers. The Primavera is an easy wreck dive for beginners and the Baixa Alagada or Flooded Reef is the very nice reef with a wreck, the Sapho.
