Some facts about Cabo Pulmo

Diving in Cabo Pulmo we can find the unique coral reef ecosystem that exists in the Gulf of California. Cabo Pulmo is considered as one of the richest agricultural ecosystems of the Gulf of California and it has been declared as a Natural area protected from 2002. There, the virgin beaches of this place give way to a shallow bay coining one of the three living reefs in North America.

One of the most incredible diving site is “The Bajo groupers” with seven different kind of coral formations and a large concentration of marine life including over 350 different species. Also is possible to find big numbers of turtles and whale sharks. You should also know the island located in the Sea Lion Colony. Diving in Cabo Pulmo will take you without any doubt to other world.

It is constituted in a very particular habitat with ecological processes and biological communities very specified. For these reasons, diving in this zone acquired connotations worldwide. It is the northernmost coral reef in the eastern Pacific, plus it is currently one of the largest coral cover. Besides the high coral cover, the fish fauna is considerably important. There are more than 875 species identified throughout the Gulf, from which 25% of them are in the same reef.

Marine life in Cabo Pulmo

Divers from all the world come up to these wonderful waters to appreciate five species of marine turtles:  Caretta caretta, Dermochelys coriaces, Eretmochelys imbricate, and the Olive ridley sea turtle, all of them are protected. In the Park reef is possible to find 11 of the most spectacular forms, sizes and colors of hard coral species. The underwater landscape is truly splendid. Respecting to fish species we can see that there are more than 225 reef species. Besides the big number, we can say that it is one of the best places of the world for diving.

Respecting to the mammals, it is possible to see a small community of sea lions and several types of dolphins. Among the last ones we have the bottlenose dolphin, the stenella (also called “spinner dolphin”) and the opening (called also “rough-toothed dolphin”). To complete such a beautiful picture, we can say that is possible to see the giants of the ocean during winter, such as the humpback whale, fin whale and Balaenoptera brydei.

And concerning to the areas of major diving Cabo Pulmo we can say that the favorite of the majority of the divers is the “The Bajo of the groupers,” which is a reef with very special characteristics.  Its length is 500 meters, its width is 30 meters and its depth varies between 10 and 18 meters. In this site the divers can be wonder with seven types of hard coral, where live beautiful species.  The underwater landscape glows with the presence of large pargones, groupers, yellow snappers, burritos flag and puffers.

The turtles that are present in this reef are the green, the Carey and the leatherbacks. And from May to September the divers will be surprised with the majestic presence of the big giant of the oceans: the whale shark.

Diving Seasonal Changes

During the winter, different species of rays go to the sandy seabeds located on either side of the reef to breed. In addition, schools of jacks usually hover around divers trying to escape from the hungry sea ​​lions, which are swimming desperately in search of food. All this beautiful and wild underwater jungle is adorned by precious golden hawks schools that offer a majestic spectacle. The humpbacks whales, also are regular guests of these waters. And, “best part,” is presented with thousands of mobula that jump on the water surface, permanently.

On the other hand, we have at the north of the Bajo a site called “The hills,” which has colder water because its proximity with the canyon. There are interesting groups of rocks separated by sandy bottoms. In this scenery move schools of jacks, strong fish and mackerel saws. All these mixed groups live with giant rays and garropas.  During the winter, the marine streams are considerably intense, what let the expert divers almost “fly” from “The hill” to “The Bajo.”

In this way, it manages to make a “2 in 1”, doing almost two dives on a single occasion. Now, the largest reef of the Cabo Pulmo is located in a site called El Cantil. This reef formation contains beautiful hard corals and different kinds of spectacular gorgonian. In this spectacular site we can find numerous canyons and rocky forms among where live different types of invertebrates, eels and rockfish and other species.

For some years, is increasing the presence of the porbeagle shark, nurse shark and white tip shark. Between The Cantil and The Bajo there is a very interesting wreck called “The vanquisher,” which was a tuna boat 30 meters long that struck the reef in 1981. Its remains have already been disintegrated, but it gave a place to the wonderful reef, which has schools puffer fish, yellow snappers and a good amount of moray eels. The beautiful turtles also can be seen in this reef. In autumn appears gigantic groups of sardines, which offer a unique show.

Other incredible site found in the Cabo Pulmo is The Hope. It's a real jungle, where all are persecutors and are persecuted. There are less corals and the visibility is not the best, but is profuse the presence of jacks, huge strong fish, tuna and shark species, and the bull shark is highlighted. Other site visited to practice diving is The Islet. In this site is possible descend through a vertiginous wall covered by the beautiful fan coral. But in the surface is necessary be alert to the abundance of schools branches.

Let us see now other diving site very spectacular. It is Las Casitas, where you can find magnificent caves, which protects beautiful corals, a great variety of tropical fishes, turtles, rays and eagles garden.  Other important diving zones of The Cabo Pulmo are The Chopitos, The Lobera, The Frailes and The Bledito.
